Like a fairy tale, a toolbox starts with a small introduction. In the beginning, you have some small tasks at home or garage. And for its completion, you need your first tool.
The time goes on, and after several years, the rookie becomes an experienced homeowner or professional repairman with great projects and toolboxes.
Here we got all Tools to Have in Workshop to pass a full way from the beginner to the professional.
Dive with us to our tool fairy tale, and we will pass together every step from the DIY Newbie to the Professional Carpenter.
Chapter One – Newbie Level
Duct Tape
Usually, we don’t notice our first well-done job at home. Duct tape is one of the most popular, versatile, and useful items to have for your DIY projects.
This durable polyurethane rubber adhesive is very sticky. You can use it for anything – temporarily repair small tears or holes, attaching a handle to a toolbox.
The options to use it are so many as possible endings of a fairy tale. Also, there are lots of different tapes – heat-resistant, water-resistant, and so on, but it is another level.
Screw Driver Set
Basically, if something in your home is fastened together, to the wall or floor. And you didn’t use duct tape for it. It is fastened with screws.
The screwdriver is one of the most often used tools from a toolbox and is the classic tool that everybody knows how to use. Just be sure that you took the right tip.
To make usage of a screwdriver easy in the future, always place it back to the set. Otherwise, you will lose tons of time searching for it in a toolbox.
Multi-bit Screwdriver
For those rookies, who don’t have enough space to store all the tools or just want to save money, there is a multi-bit screwdriver. Only one handle and several bits look to be handy.
Pay attention to the handle. It has to be comfortable and without any grip ribs. Another way you will get corn on your hands. But in general, I swear you will buy a screwdriver set later or an electric screwdriver.
Adjustable Wrench
This is a must-have tool for everybody who will do something himself. It doesn’t cost a lot and at the same time, works for different sizes of nuts and bolts.
After some time, it will be more comfortable to use a socket set, but at the beginning, the adjustable wrench is just what you need.
Utility Knife
It is a convenient tool that can be used daily. Do you need to open a box or a sealed package? Do you want to sharp a pencil and don’t have a pencil sharpener? Do you need to cut cardboard? Honestly, the uses of the utility knife are endless.
Flex Tape
After a duct tape, another tape that will be very useful is Flex Tape. The main difference – more tasks could be done with a longer lifetime of the result.
Flex Tape is a super-strong and sticky tape, that can work on all surfaces, even underwater. Definitely a must-have tool for every toolbox.
Scissors
It is obvious that you need this tool, but many people often forget about it. How will you cut a Flex Tape or Duct tape? Don’t forget to pick one pair of scissors. At least, you already know how to use it.
WD-40
Probably, this the only industrial spray that could be found almost in every house, car, or garage.
Like the utility knife, the uses of WD-40 are practically endless, you can use it for squeaky door hinges and many other ways. So it is always better to have two spray cans.
Super Glue
The irreplaceable assistant when you need to repair something rapidly. It can attach to each over wood, glass, leather, plastic, metal, and much other staff.
It is also handy when you accidentally broke something, and don’t want the owner to know about it.
Chapter Two – Rookie Level
At this level, we become more confident. We want to handle more tasks. We are ready to suggest our help for doing a small job, as an example – to hang photo frames on the wall.
Before doing such a job, you always have to prepare safety tools, so let’s begin with it!
Work Gloves
Work gloves cover several goals, my loveliest – they keeping your hands clean. Other purposes are safety and comfort.
Most important, gloves save your hands from physical treatment. It is much harder to cut yourself when you are wearing gloves, and it is warmer to work during the cold weather in them.
Safety Glasses
Safety glasses don’t provide extra comfort but protecting your eyes. While you are drilling the wall, it is elementary to get some dust in your eyes, and at least that will be unpleasant.
Don’t even try to saw metal or wood without the safety glasses; just a small sliver of wood in your eye will cause many problems.
Right safety glasses are made from a polycarbonate lens, which provides impact resistance. They cost $10, but it worth it. Safety equipment is for sure have to be in the list of Tools to Have in Workshop.
Measuring Tape
To hang the frames in the right place, you need such things as measuring tape. In another way, the whole process will become madness.
When you are a beginner in building or DIY, you don’t have a trained eye. So you need to measure everything.
Carpenter’s Pencil
Small, but very handy tool. Make it easy to mark on all possible surfaces. Hint – carpenter pencil won’t roll away, because it has an oval shape.
Cordless Drill / Driver
Someone will say that it is a screwdriver for lazy. I will say that it is one of the most popular tools in every toolbox because it saves lots of time and energy.
Better to have two batteries for unstoppable work. And don’t forget to charge it after you finished your project. For the beginner, simple models are OK. But if you are planning to use it often, we recommend buying more expensive ones.
Drill bits
Usually, the cordless drill has already some bits which go in the set. But it would be enough, only if you have only one size of all hardware around you.
A good set of bits is the base of every toolbox. Pay attention to choose the one, with several different bits – screwdrivers, drills, hex, and others.
Hammer
This is another widely used tool at home. How to use nails without a hammer?
With the hammer, you can drive the nails in, and in case you have a claw hammer (which I recommend) with the opposite side, you can pry them out. The opportunities to use a hammer at home are endless.
Hex Wrench Set
Want to buy inexpensive ready-to-assemble furniture? No problems, just prepare the hex wrench. Hex-shaped hardware is very popular, and you can meet it not only in furniture but also in cars, bicycles, and other stuff.
The list of Tools to Have in the Workshop will not be full without Hex Wrench Set.
Pliers
Pliers are very popular among professionals and non-professional because of their high gripping power to hold whatever you want. They can help to twist and snip easily.
Socket Tool Kit Set
Choose the correct size of the socket, and you can easily tight or loos nuts. This tool has a ratchet, so it very easy to operate with it, even if you don’t have much space.
Different sizes of wrench make it possible to handle any nut.
Wrench Set
Sometimes it is impossible to access the nut with a wrench. In some situations, you just don’t have enough space. At this moment, a usual wrench will be handy. It is thin and can be used almost everywhere. We recommend taking a look at Sunex Tools
.
Flashlight
As we have mentioned in small spaces, we also have to say about dark areas.
In some situations, the daylight not reaching some areas, or you may need to do something during the night without an option to turn the light on.
In such circumstances, the flashlight will be irreplaceable. Bright and light, these is the features you have to look for.
Battery Organizer
Flashlight work on batteries. And probably there are lots of things in your house which work on them. Usually, we have a mess in a kitchen drawer and don’t understand which battery is alive, and which is not.
A battery organizer helps keep your batteries neat and organized. Some organizers have a battery tester, which is not only handy but also, it is in our Tools to Have in Workshop list.
Air Compressor
Surprise! The last tool in our Rookie level is not another socket or screwdriver.
Air compressors are useful at home because it makes it possible to inflate wheels of your car, sons bicycle, all balls and even an air mattress for your guests.
Toolbox
At the end of this level, you will have lots of different tools, which need a particular space to be stored. A toolbox makes it possible to organize them and keep them in the right order.
So you will not lose any time to find the tool which you need at the moment. Also, the toolbox allows you to take all the tools easily, the place where you will use it. No more runs between the garage and work area.
Chapter Three – Skilled Level
The difference between a rookie and a skilled master is in the variety of tasks they can handle. While rookie can operate only with a shortlist of tools and tasks. A skilled master has a much more significant range of all possible jobs to do.
Tool Set
If you are sure that you will come to this level, then you can skip some steps in previous chapters and start from a toolset.
The benefit of a toolset is that it already has almost all the most popular tools in it. And buying it all together will cost you cheaper, as you will buy it separately. Also, you will get a handy storage case.
Ladder
The difference between a rookie and a skilled master is also in detail. While the rookie is using the chair to reach out to the highest point for the future hook for the frame. The master is using the ladder. Besides, using the ladder is much safer.
Ear Protection
Another point in safe equipment that uses the master is earmuffs to protect ears from loud sound. I don’t recommend to cut the budget on it and choose comfortable earmuffs with a high hearing protection ratio.
The 34db rate is more than enough for all possible tasks at the moment and in the future. You can drill, saw, demolition in such earmuffs, and be on the safe side.
Extension Cord
Simple, but a handy thing. An extension cord will bring more comfort to your work. 25ft is enough to use at home. For outdoor use, I recommend 50ft.
One more advice is to buy a bright colored cord so that it will be visible for people around you. Sometimes you can use extension cord for charging electric car.
Rope
Work outdoor? Need to raise to the top some hardware? All you need to do this job is a rope. There are plenty of options on the market. Choose which one you like more.
Cable Ties
Still talking about the details which differ the master from the rookie. Cable ties bring more order to all cables, makes it easier to keep it clean and to find the one which is needed, in case something will happen.
Handsaw
The handsaw is a classic. Of course, you can say the chainsaw is much better and efficient. But in some cases, the handsaw just don have a substitution.
No doubt, it is one of the most popular tools among professionals carpenters. The reason for that – handsaw is much faster for making quick and small cuts.
Putty Knife
Spatula, spreader, scraper, spackle. All these terms mean a putty knife. A putty knife is useful for a variety of jobs. You can scrape paint with it or spread plaster.
There are so many things to do with it. There are also different sizes and forms available. Just choose the one which will suit your job better.
Long-nose pliers
With long and narrow tips, these pliers can get into very tight spaces. Another use – every job, where your fingers are too big or too weak to get a good grip. You can use them at home, garage, or back yard. In other words – these pliers are in the must-have list.
Hardware Assortment Kit
Sometimes you need to replace the lost nut, bolt, or screw. For this reason, such a kit is a treasure. Another reason to have different hardware under your hand ii the possibility to finish every job where you need to fix something speedy without an extra run to the DIY shop.
Electrical Insulation Tape
This item is a must-have for anyone who is planning to work with electricity. As mentioned in the name, this tape insulates. It insulates electrical wires, is made of vinyl, and is very cheap.
Level
Do you need a straight horizontal line? The usual bubble level can help to draw it in second. For sure, the level is in the top 10 most used tools of a professional carpenter.
You can buy one for $2, but I recommend to invest a little bit more to get different levels in one, ruler, and laser as a bonus.
Walabot Stud Finder
Do you want to become a superman with an X-ray vision? A stud finder will help you. It helps to avoid electric cables and pipes in the wall and find the best place to drive in a screw.
Usual stud finders are a bit challenging to read and understand in case you are not a professional carpenter. Walabot made a solution for all ordinary people like you and me. Attach it to your phone on Android and look inside the wall. That’s it.
Hose Clamps
Hose clamps not used often but very handy when you are working with plumbs at home or in your car. We recommend having it, but the final decision is up to you.
From my point of view, this list of Tools to Have in Workshop will not be full without it.

A must-have tool in case you are living in the countryside. It is the fastest way to cut the tree or its branch. Just be careful and always think about safety.
There are different types of chainsaw on the market, electric with cord or on battery, also the classic one with a two-stroke engine. The handiest is without the cable, electric, or gas? It’s up to you.
Chisels
Chisels are used to sharping and carving wood. This is not the first tool that you have to add to your toolbox, because it is not often used.
But you will buy it over some time, and we recommend to do it earlier. As earlier you will buy it, the earlier you will start to work with wood.
Sledgehammer
Do you need to demolish a wall or something else? Sledgehammer is the first tool you will use. Pay attention that it has to be comfortable to use. Good grip to hold it, better if it has shock reduction feature, and forged in one piece is in must features.
Hammer Drill
Another tool that will be useful to demolish. Nevertheless, it is also instrumental in repair and construction. Need to drill a solid wall? This hammer drill will be hard not to use. Just do not forget to buy the right drill bits.
Jab Saw
The Jab Saw is not so powerful as a hand saw or chain saw. But when it comes to cutting drywall or making holes for electrical outlets, this is the only right tool.
Drywall is too strong to cut with a utility knife and too weak to cut it with something bigger than a jab saw. In case that 99% of houses have drywalls, this tool is a must-have.
Socket Set
We have started our third chapter with a toolset, but the socket set is not a similar thing. It is an excellent addition to it. Besides, it is super handy in case you would like to repair your car. There are plenty of different sizes for nuts and bolts.

Working outside the house? Let’s make it more joyful. The job site radio has a good sound and protection from possible falls and other incidents.

Our best choice is a hardware chest. If at the moment you can’t fill the whole chest, don’t panic. Very soon you will need another one.

This is a classic method to make a vertical reference line or to establish a vertical or horizontal datum. The plumb bob work principle stands on gravity.

The only thing you have to look for is the number of different pockets and their sizes. At least you need places for hammers, screwdriver, utility knife, nails, and screws.
Another essential question is about size. But it should not confuse you too much. Take the size of your jeans and add 2 inches, what would be the size of your belt.
Heat Gun
The first question from rookies is about the difference between the usual hairdryer and a heat gun. If no, can we use a hairdryer instead?
Our answer is “no.” The conventional hairdryer has a maximum temperature of about 158F. While a heat gun can warm up to 1100F. Feel the difference?

A stud finder is not a necessary tool in case you need to drill walls only from time to time. Another side, I will recommend having it, cause it can save your time and nerves.

One of the benefits of a sliding miter saw is a possibility to cut wide boards. That is allowed by a sliding out blade.
Table Saw
In case you decided that you are not ready for the sliding miter saw, the table saw is what you need instead. It is smaller, but still one of the most versatile and efficient tools for woodwork.

For some projects, you need to join the metal part together. The only efficient way to do it is to use a welder. There are two types of welders available on the market.

Pipe crimper has the same task as usual crimper. But it is conjoining two pipes, but not pieces of metal. For that purpose, it has a unique form that allows it to clasp the tube.
PEX Clamp Cinch Tool
Cinch is an alternative way to connect pipes. The first method is crimping, but it doesn’t work well all the time. Crimp rings are usually made of copper, which is softer at low temperatures than stainless steel.
